HTC acquires S3 Graphics for $ 300 million
The most prolific smartphone manufacturer in recent years the production company has bought graphics chip S3. The company, whose largest amount of shares owned by VIA, was sold for a total of around 300 milion dollars, and now belongs entirely to Dell vostro 1400 battery.
Some of you will remember this company, and may even recognize some of their products. S3 was sometime during the 90’s one of the graphics cards manufacturers recognized with 3dfx and Nvidia, though the performance of their products suffered enough in comparison to competitive units. However, the different technologies and techniques patented by the company are of great value for many other companies involved in the development of hardware and Toshiba pa3594u 1brs and it is this value that HTC has taken into account to complete his latest acquisition. In fact, such is the demand for these techniques, which are open S3 and disputes between different companies for their improper use, or unlicensed.
This week, we learned of a statement issued in the United States, Apple declared guilty of violating two patents filed by S3 graphics-related, such as S3TC a texture compression technique used on millions of computers that equipped with HP pavilion dv6500 batteries and other devices ( consoles, smartphones) for over 15 years.
The acquisition has been very easy for HTC, in part possibly because its co-founder, Cher Wang is also the CEO of VIA Technologies and a major shareholder of another company owning S3, WTI. This purchase will guarantee access to all HTC patents and technologies developed by the graphics chip maker and could help in their particular mediating legal battle with dp390a, HTC began in 2010 when sued the Cupertino company also patent violation .
But HTC will use S3’s experience to develop new technologies, or just need to win lawsuits? Perhaps in time, research on newly acquired techniques could provide the manufacturer of smartphones best methods of texture compression and graphics, helping to ThinkPad z61t battery faster and lighter – HTC Sense, anyone? – But for now seems more a ploy to benefit legally, something that benefits the consumer report.
